"Background: Prolonged sitting time has been linked to several chronic diseases. Objective: To investigate whether daily television viewing time is associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes in adults. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 8,500 adults aged 40 to 65 years without diabetes at baseline reported their usual daily television viewing time. Participants were followed up for 10 years. The primary outcome was a new diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Results: During follow-up, 640 participants developed type 2 diabetes. Those who watched television for more than four hours a day had a higher risk of developing the disease than those who watched less than one hour a day, even after adjustment for body weight and physical activity. Conclusion: Long television viewing time may be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Reducing sedentary time could be a useful public health strategy, but intervention studies are needed to confirm this."
