"What is a heart attack?
A heart attack, called myocardial infarction by doctors, happens when the flow of blood to part of the heart muscle is suddenly blocked, most often by a blood clot in a coronary artery. Without oxygen, that part of the muscle starts to die. The faster treatment begins, the less damage is done.
Warning signs
The most common symptom is pain, pressure or tightness in the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back. The pain may spread to the arms, neck, jaw or back. Other signs include shortness of breath, a cold sweat, nausea and light-headedness. Not everyone has chest pain: women, older adults and people with diabetes are more likely to have milder or less typical symptoms, such as unusual tiredness or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
What to do
If you think someone is having a heart attack, call emergency services immediately. Do not wait to see if the symptoms go away, and do not drive yourself to the hospital."
