Blood flow velocity in the circulation
As blood moves from the aorta into smaller and smaller vessels, each individual vessel becomes narrower, but the number of vessels increases enormously. As a result, the total cross-sectional area of all the capillaries together is much greater than that of the aorta. Because the same volume of blood must pass through each level of the circulation every minute, velocity is inversely related to total cross-sectional area: the larger the total area, the slower the flow. Blood therefore moves fastest in the aorta and slowest in the capillaries, which gives enough time for the exchange of gases and nutrients with the tissues. On its way back to the heart, velocity increases again as veins join to form fewer, larger vessels.
