Red blood cells: built for transport
Mature human red blood cells, whose nucleus and mitochondria are lost during maturation in the bone marrow, are little more than flexible bags of hemoglobin. This has two important consequences. First, the cells have more space for hemoglobin and do not consume the oxygen they carry, because without mitochondria they obtain ATP only from anaerobic glycolysis. Second, they cannot divide or replace damaged proteins, which is one reason why they survive for only about 120 days in the circulation. Old red cells are then removed mainly by macrophages in the spleen, which recycle their iron.

As duas consequências listadas em seguida confirmam isso ('without mitochondria they obtain ATP only from anaerobic glycolysis' e 'they cannot divide or replace damaged proteins').
