Indian words enter the dictionary
A major English dictionary has added dozens of new words used in India. Among them are 'prepone', which means to move an event to an earlier time (the opposite of 'postpone'), and 'timepass', something you do just to pass the time. Many Indians also ask 'What is your good name?' when they want to know someone's name politely.
For years, some people saw these forms as mistakes. Today, experts recognize them as part of Indian English, a variety used by millions of people in education, business and the media. 'English is no longer the property of one country,' said a member of the dictionary's editorial team. 'It grows wherever people use it.'
