Young bees learn new tricks by watching others
Researchers in Australia have found that bumblebees can learn to solve simple puzzles by observing other bees. In the experiment, a group of bees was trained to pull a small string to reach a sugar drink. Later, new bees that had never seen the puzzle watched the trained ones through a clear wall. After only a few observations, most of the new bees were able to pull the string themselves.
"It was surprising to see how fast they copied the behaviour," said one of the scientists. The team believes this kind of social learning may help bee colonies adapt to changes in their environment, such as new types of flowers. However, they also say more studies are needed to understand how common this ability is in the wild.
