Opinion: Stop asking for 'native speakers'
Open any website with jobs for English teachers in Asia, Latin America or Europe and you will find the same words: 'Native speakers only'. Some ads even list the 'right' countries: the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland. Strangely, Nigeria, India, Jamaica and Singapore, where millions of people grow up speaking English, rarely appear on these lists. Is this about language, or about something else?
A good teacher needs training, experience and the ability to explain how a language works, things that no passport can guarantee. Many of the best teachers I have met learned English as adults, and that is exactly why they understand their students' difficulties. Schools should hire teachers for what they can do, not for where they were born.
