Last week I joined an online meeting with engineers from Japan, Nigeria, Germany and Brazil. Nobody in the room was a native speaker of English, but we worked together for two hours and solved a real problem. Nobody laughed at my accent, and I didn't laugh at anyone else's. We spoke slowly, checked if everyone understood and used simple words.
At the end, I realized something important: in my job, English is not a test to show who sounds 'more American'. It is a bridge. Most conversations in English today happen between people like us, who learned it as a second or third language. So if you are afraid to speak because your accent is 'wrong', remember: being clear and respectful is more useful than sounding like a movie star.
